The Eastside Neighbors Network and the Washington Homeownership Resource Center (WHRC) invite you to a collaborative program to promote awareness of underused resources available to help seniors remain in and maintain their homes.

Property Tax Relief and Home Ownership Help for Older Homeowners

Worried about property taxes? You are not alone! Depending on your age, income, disability, and veteran’s status, there are four programs available in Washington to help reduce or defer your property taxes. Come hear about how these programs work, who qualifies, and where to get help applying. We will also briefly cover other tools to help seniors remain stable in their homes. There will be time to answer questions from workshop attendees and for one-on-one questions.

Our speaker is WHRC Executive Director Denise Rodriguez. WHRC is a statewide non-profit and has operated the official statewide foreclosure prevention hotline since 2011. The WHRC hotline connects to hundreds of different programs across the state to help homeowners and homebuyers.

Denise will explain current tax relief programs:

  • Who might qualify
  • What to do if you think you might qualify
  • Where to get help with the application, and
  • What else WHRC can do for older adults (for example, connect to repair assistance and reverse mortgage counseling)

We will also report on the recently-passed and more inclusive program (i.e., higher income-level threshhold) that will go into effect in 2020 (SB5160).

Following Denise's presentation,  ENN Volunteer Liz Howland will meet informally with participants to talk about her experience with the application process and offer assistance for those who are deciding whether to apply.

"State law provides two tax benefit programs for senior citizens and the disabled: property tax exemptions and property tax deferrals. Yet more than 26,000 qualified seniors and disabled persons have yet to register for the exemption, and only 1 in 100 of those eligible for deferrals are currently enrolled. Details of these two programs are provided below. The process of applying is fairly simple.

We encourage you or those you know to take advantage of this meaningful tax relief provided for our citizens on fixed incomes."
